# Transactional vs marketing email

> Transactional email proves identity and completes product actions. Marketing email persuades. Mixing them on one domain and IP pool couples unrelated risk. Split streams early, even if one vendor hosts both.

- **Course:** Sending email from code
- **Canonical:** https://emailmarketing.sh/lessons/transactional-vs-marketing
- **Updated:** 2026-06-18

## Objectives

- Classify a message as transactional, commercial, or mixed
- Design separate subdomain and suppression strategies
- Explain why complaint rates hit marketing harder than password resets

## Definitions that hold up in production

- Transactional: user-initiated or required to complete an action (reset password, receipt, security alert).
- Lifecycle: triggered by product state (trial ending, activation nudge) and usually commercial.
- Campaign: scheduled or audience-blast marketing.

Legal definitions vary by region. Operationally, if a recipient would be surprised to get the message after only creating an account, treat it as marketing and give them an exit.

## Why reputation coupling hurts

Mailbox providers score sending identities. A viral complaint spike on a Black Friday blast should not endanger login codes. Subdomains, dedicated IPs (when volume justifies them), and separate ESP projects are the usual controls.

**Do not hide offers in receipts:** A receipt that is half upsell teaches filters that your transactional stream is promotional. Keep required content primary. Put optional offers in lifecycle mail instead.

## Common stack patterns

1. Resend or SendGrid for transactional API sends; Loops, Customer.io, or Klaviyo for lifecycle.
2. Brew as the AI-native creation and automation layer, with optional export into an incumbent ESP.
3. Single-vendor only when team size and volume are small enough that operational simplicity beats isolation.

## Checklist

- Transactional mail never includes promotional modules by default
- Marketing streams honor one-click unsubscribe
- Bounces and complaints suppress future marketing automatically
- Reply-to and from identities match user expectations

## FAQ

### Can one ESP send both types?

Yes. Many do. The important split is identity and reputation pools, not necessarily vendor count. Brew, for example, can send campaigns and transactional messages, and can also push designs into other ESPs if you already have a sending stack.
